Harold
Spencer was born in Chellaston in 1898, the son of William and Elizabeth
Spencer.
On the 1911 census the family were living at Hillside, Church Street,
Chellaston. Church Street is now High Street and Hillside is possibly
the area after the St Peter’s Church going towards Snelsmoor
Lane.
Harold’s father, William was employed as a Road Foreman. The
house had six rooms, not including scullery, landing, lobby, closet
or bathroom. Ten people lived in the house.
Harold enlisted into the Suffolk Regiment and entered into the Theatre
of War in France on 29th June 1915. He died of tetanus on the 1st
September 1915 aged only 18.
He was awarded the British Medal, Victory Medal and 1915 Star.
